RxWhat Is Omega-3?
Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat which are increasingly recognised as important to human health.
Omega-3s are called essential fatty acids (EFAs) because they are critical for good health. The human body cannot make them itseslf so Omega-3s must be obtained from food - primarily oily fish or a few plant sources like flaxseed. Key Omega-3 fatty acids include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) Both are found primarily in oily cold-water fish such as salmon and mackerel. Aside from fresh seaweed, plant foods rarely contain EPA or DHA. Too much DHA can reduce the benefits of EPA so it's important to maintain a ratio of 2:1 EPA to DHA.

What are the health benefits of taking Omega-3?
Scientists made one of the first associations between Omega-3s and human health while studying the Inuit people of Greenland in the 1970s. As a group, the Inuit suffered far less from diseases like coronary heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes than their European counterparts. Yet their diet was very high in fat from eating whale, seal and salmon. Eventually researchers realised that these foods were all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and that these were providing real benefits.

Researchers continue to explore this exciting field. They've found that without a sufficient supply of Omega-3s, the body will use saturated fats to construct cell membranes. The resulting cell membranes, however, are less elastic - a situation that can have a negative effect on the heart because it makes it harder to maintain a good circulation.

In addition, nutritionists have come to recognise the importance of getting the right balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet. Because most people on a typical Western diet consume far more omega-6-rich foods (like cereals, bread and cakes, fried foods, margarine, etc.), the ratio is out of balance for almost everyone. This means for most Europeans the emphasis now needs to be on increasing omega-3s to make the ratio more even.

Specifically, omega-3s in fish oil or other forms may help to:
•  Support heart health. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to play a part in keeping "bad" cholesterol levels low, stabilising irregular heart beat and reducing hypertension (high blood pressure). Omega-3 fatty acids are also natural blood thinners, reducing the "stickiness" of blood.
•  Support Joint Mobility. Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids may help people with autoimmune diseases. This is probably because the omega-3s help the arteries, as well as many other parts of the body, stay inflammation free. EPA and DHA are successful at this because they can be converted into natural anti-inflammatory substances called prostaglandins - compounds that help decrease inflammation and pain.
•  Support brain function. The brain is remarkably fatty: In fact, this organ is 60% fat and needs omega-3s to function properly. Now researchers have discovered a link between memory capacity and some mood disorders with the presence of low concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in the body. Great for children's learning. It’s no wonder that fish has long been known as a “brain food”.

Pregnant women are advised to maintain good intakes for omega-3 to aid the development of the foetus.

Can’t I get enough Omega-3 form the food I eat?
Try to get the right balance for your body by reducing your consumption of omega-6-rich foods at the same time that you increase your intake of these Omega-3-rich foods:
-Oily fish: Salmon and other fatty cold-water fish including herring, sardines and mackerel are all excellent sources of Omeag-3. But it’s a sad reflection on the world we live in that scientists also say that it is unwise to eat more than 2 or 3 portions a week of sea fish because of potential pollutants like PCBs and mercury.
-Plant sources: Rapeseed oil, flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts, and leafy green vegetables are all good sources of ALA, the plant-based omega-3.
-Enhanced foods: These include omega-3 enriched eggs.
-Supplements: These are a safe and convenient way of increasing omega-3 intake. There are many available but make sure you check out the level of useful EPA, DHA or ALA they contain.
